Gloria Petyarre

Gloria Petyarre is a First Nations artist, and one of Australia's most successful and significant female artists.

She is best known for creating the artistic, aboriginal style of painting made up of swirling Kurrajong bush medicine leaves - which are leaf-shaped brush strokes positioned closely together on a dark background. This became her motif. This style beautifully captures the movement of leaves or grass in the wine.

Gloria became the first Indigenous Australian artist ever to win a major art prize at the Gallery of New South Wales when she won the 'Wynne Prize for Landscape' in 1999.
